L’arme que tient ce combattant (image 1) est un FN FAL, développé à la Fabrique Nationale d’Herstal, en Belgique, dès 1953. Le FN FAL est l’une des armes les plus répandues dans le monde, adoptée officiellement par plus de 90 pays. Le FAL tire des munitions de calibre 7.62x55mm NATO.

Il en existe de nombreux modèles et variantes. Pour déterminer la nationalité et le type de l’arme, et éventuellement sa provenance, il est nécessaire de mener un travail d’enquête sur le terrain.

Les photos présentées dans ce diaporama proviennent toutes du conflit libyen de 2011 et donnent un aperçu de l’abondance du FAL (voir par exemple, la 2e image).

Les armes passent de main en main et survivent la plupart des combatants. Sans surprise, les armes que l’on voit sur ces photos passeront les frontières et s’utiliseront dans d’autres conflits. D’où la nécessité d’un travail journalistique dédié à leur identification, et à la connaissance de leurs mouvements.
